If it had not been the LORD who was on our side…
This is the refrain the writer of today’s Psalm (124) makes. “If it had not been the LORD who was on our side… Then the flood would have swept us away, the torrent would have gone over us; then over us would have gone the raging waters” (vs 4-5, NRSV).
I admit I didn’t do any research on the history of this psalm today. But I think it’s a pretty safe bet to guess that this was written as encouragement to people who were facing a challenge that felt like, well, raging waters that threatened to sweep them away.
The Psalm recounts this dangerous torrent from the Israelites’ past, probably calling to mind crossing the sea in the escape from Egypt. The writer’s point? We got through that because God was on our side.
Whatever challenges you’re facing, whatever chaotic torrents and raging waters surge around you, figuratively or literally, God is on your side. God will find a way through this mess too. After all, God’s gotten you this far, right?
