On Sunday, June 19th, in our Gospel reading Jesus tells us that “no one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62). And yet as the Church we often find ourselves looking back to what was, rather than what could be. Through our Strategic Planning Process, we hope to intentionally look forward to becoming a new kind of Church that can effectively put hand to plow and look ahead to where God is using us to cultivate Good News in Hamilton.
Our second session was held on Saturday, June 18th to discuss a strategy for outreach. By the end of the day, our team had devised a working outreach plan that sets 3 new goals for the future of our congregation:
1. We will assess and report community demographic and psychographic (personality, values, opinions, attitudes, interests and lifestyles) annually. This means that we are asking ourselves to take our community context seriously in our ministry planning, paying attention to what is going on in our community. We hope to achieve this through intentionally presence in the community and regular reporting/analysis.
2. We will increase St Mark’s visibility and organizational partnerships in the community. We hope to do this through refreshing our branding and communication tools, participate in community events, and embracing community specific ministries.
3. We will provide intentional prayer for community concerns and needs. We are encouraging the congregation to pray specifically for the people and organizations in Hamilton, and lift those prayer concerns in worship. We also hope to provide learning opportunities for our members to engage in public prayer and evangelism.
There is a lot of work ahead of us if we are going to effectively reach our community with the Good News of the redeeming love of Jesus Christ, but these goals are a great start for our congregation!
The next Strategic Planning session will focus on ministry planning which will be held Saturday, August 20th 10:00-3:00. All of us are encouraged to be part of the Strategic Leadership Team and attend these sessions!
